Lisa: Achieved Work-Life Balance With a Manufacturing Role
Lisa – Mill Operator
Before finding her way in manufacturing, Lisa worked in a variety of industries. She has two degrees, one in Accounting and the other in Medical Assisting. While employed in her previous position, Lisa was forced to seek new employment due to family obligations. While searching, she came across a Rust Belt Recruiting listing on Indeed. Lisa applied, interviewed, and was hired within one week.
Lisa now works as a Mill Operator at a metal fabricator in Cleveland, Ohio. She is one of the few employees trained on every mill and planer in the plant, allowing her to help out wherever she is needed.
“I’m a very upbeat person, I don’t like to be around negativity. I get to do my work without someone breathing over my neck constantly. Working here has been very satisfying — it keeps me in shape. I like that they work with me in training. They show me respect, I show them respect. Knowing that I’m appreciated — that makes a person feel really good.”

Lisa has been most impressed with her company for its willingness to be flexible with her. With the custody of her five-year-old granddaughter, Lisa is responsible for daycare pickups and dropoffs before and after work. Lisa reports that her employer works with her on this front because she does her job and gets their product out on time. The flexibility offered to her in this position has helped Lisa to feel happier and more connected with her community. Not having to worry about daycare pickups and dropoffs and many of the other logistics of caring for her family has helped to relieve Lisa of the stress she felt in previous jobs.
